AC, peak heat, and the desktop that won’t quit
July is when outdated tech sends you the real invoice.
Alabama and the Florida Panhandle hit peak grid demand mid-July through August. That’s when every old server, every overcooled supply closet, every “still works” desktop draws its maximum monthly cost. The newer the equipment, the less it draws to do the same work. The older the equipment, the more it draws and the more heat it dumps into a room your AC is already fighting to keep at 72 degrees.
Nobody puts that line item on a P&L. It still shows up on the bill.

Here’s why it costs more than the alternative. “Still works” is a binary judgment. Either the machine boots or it doesn’t. What “still works” doesn’t measure: the energy you’re paying to run a desktop with the efficiency of a 2018 toaster, the minutes your team waits while it loads, the focus that breaks every time it freezes mid-save. Each of those costs has a price. None of them show up as a line item called outdated business technology.
They show up as the power bill. They show up as the day that always feels a little behind. They show up as the third “have you tried restarting?” of the morning.
The trifecta cost of outdated business technology
Three categories of cost stack quietly every month. Most owners only see one of them, and it’s usually the smallest:

Higher energy bills. Older equipment works harder to keep up. It uses more power, generates more heat, and forces your AC to work harder cooling the room it just heated. Newer systems are built to be far more efficient. They use less power, run cooler, and do more work. In July and August in our area, this delta is the most visible.

Lost time, every day. Tasks that used to take 30 seconds take 90. Files that should open in 2 seconds take 8. Small delays become routine. Multiply 30 seconds of waiting times 50 actions per day times 8 employees times 22 working days. That’s hours your team paid for and didn’t get.

The interruption tax. Systems freeze. Connections drop. Restarts become part of the day. Each one might only cost three minutes. The focus break costs much more. By the time someone is back on what they were doing, the momentum is gone.
When you stack all three, “if it still works” stops being a frugal answer. It’s the most expensive shelf in the office.
How to start before peak season
You don’t need to replace everything. You need to find the two or three items costing the most and pull them forward. The 8-year-old workstation that holds up payroll. The router that drops connection twice a week. The printer-fax-scanner combo from 2015 that runs hotter than your office coffee maker.
Right-sized, not “everything new.” Replacing three high-draw devices that hold up daily work usually saves more than replacing the whole fleet, and you can do most of it in one weekend before the AC peaks.
